What is Shark Diving?

Shark diving allows shark enthusiasts, and researchers from around the world an easy way to observe the extraordinary world of sharks. Cages create a discernable barrier that sharks quickly recognize allowing you to safely observe and experience these incredible animals up close and personal.

Cage used for Shark Diving

Loading the cage on the boat.

Cage diving is unique in the fact that the rewards often far exceed the effort both physically and mentally. Not to say that cage diving is not challenging, getting in the water with up to seven Great Whites is very challenging and very exciting to say the least!

Once ready to take the dive, the diver would step onto the diving platform of the boat and slide through the opening at the top of the cage. The lid at the top is now securely closed. Once in position, the diver's head is only approx. half a meter below the surface.

Shark Diving Boat

Once in position, the cage drifts away from the boat, secured to the boat with nylon ropes, top and bottom.

When feeding actively around the boat, the sharks may occasionally brush their tail against the cage. They are very curious animals and often come close-up to the cage, taking a closer look at the diver. A personal, eye-to-eye encounter with this awesome animal is guaranteed to get the adrenaline going!

Time spent in the cage depends on weather/water conditions, shark activity and eagerness of each diver. Cages are designed and built to maximize safety and comfort for divers. The cages are constructed using high-grade materials and state of the art fabrication processes. The cages are an excellent underwater platform for viewing and photographing sharks.

Is Shark Diving Safe?

Even at the height of a feeding event with multiple animals, sharks prove to be shy, slow moving animals. Divers are amazed to learn first hand that these animals are almost 'gentle'. However, divers should maintain a healthy respect for these awesome predators; in and out of the water!

Do I Need Qualifications to Dive?

Other than being reasonably physically fit, you don't have to be an expert diver to cage dive. For non-divers, you will normally be required to attend a one-hour on-board cage diving presentation.

What If I Am Not Certified?

You have two options: You will either be sent down with a qualified instructor; or, you will be able to join on board cameraman, for amazing topside feeding images.

Do the Sharks Ever Attack the Cage?

No, this is not typical behaviour.

Is Cage Diving Always Possible?

On occasions adverse weather may prevent safe cage diving operations. The captain will make the decision when he feels that safety is at risk. He may move to a better location or even cancel the day's trip and reschedule another trip as soon as the weather improves. Safety should always be priority.
